Jan Verhas (1834- 1896). Trained by his father, he studied at the Antwerp Academie. He is best known for his genre paintings and scenes with children from the upper class in Brussels. In Rome in 1862 he painted two works, commissioned by the Belgian government: Velleda and the Battle of Callo, 20 June 1638. On returning to Belgium from Italy (and after a period in Paris) he lived in Binche from 1864 to 1867 and was married there.
